Eleven retailers run their own label in Great Britain: how a supplier applies, and what protection the statutory code gives you once you are supplying.

Market share

Great Britain, not the UK

From our expert interviews.

Rob Johnson, interviewed September 2026, on the private-label market that sits outside the supermarket:

Almost everyone who thinks about private label thinks about the grocers on this page. Far fewer think about the QSR chain, the contract caterer, the airline, the hospital, the prison. Those operators need product made to their own specification, without the manufacturer's brand being the one the consumer sees, and that is a private-label market in its own right.

Where the larger opportunity sits. Rob's example is a major quick-service operator building a serious coffee offer. It started with an established coffee company that brought far more than capacity β€” it knew the category, the flavour profiles, what a credible coffee proposition takes β€” and stood to win huge, predictable volumes from a single customer in return.

And how that relationship ends. Once the operator understands the category and has established itself, the arrangement can change. The business can be put out to tender, with several manufacturers competing to supply what has by then become the operator's own product.

The trade. Large volumes, fixed contracts, and production lines that keep running. But that same scale hands the customer enormous negotiating power, and margin is where it gets used.

The foodservice and out-of-home view of private label, where Rob has spent much of his career. Read it alongside the retailer table below rather than in place of it.

The retailers

<aside> πŸ’‘

Every retailer here sells imported product. The question is never whether they import. It is whether they will contract with you directly, or expect you to arrive through an importer.

Published route for overseas suppliers records one narrow thing: whether the retailer publishes a supplier route aimed at suppliers based outside Great Britain. That is a fact about their website. It is not a statement about what they buy or where from. The Direct or via importer column is the one that answers the real question. It reads Not established on every row, because no retailer publishes this. Our market experts are filling it.

Grocery share is Kantar / Worldpanel, GB grocery, 12 weeks to mid-July 2026. Payment days come from the UK statutory payment practices register, not from what retailers say about themselves. Click any retailer to open its full profile, its brands and its sources.

The own-label brands

Every own-label brand these eleven retailers run, grouped by the tier it occupies: value, core, premium, and the specialist ranges built around a single need state. Find the tier you would be pitching into, and the brands listed are what you would be competing against for the shelf. A tier holding only one or two names is the most useful result this table can give you.
